Wearing a mask with glasses: How to keep them from fogging up

If you wear glasses, wearing a mask can lead to fog on your lenses. While this may be a new issue for us, it's a long been an issue for those in the medical field.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — We are now encouraged to wear masks to protect ourselves and others from the spread of COVID-19. But if you wear glasses, wearing a mask can lead to fog on your lenses. While this may be a new issue for us, it's a long been an issue for those in the medical field.

In an article published in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, two doctors explained the cause and offered advice to defog glasses.

The authors explain that the mask redirects exhaled air upwards. The air is warmer than the lens surface and that leads to tiny droplets of moisture scattering the light and fogging your view.

The authors said this can easily be prevented by washing the lens with soap and water. That adds a coating or film on the lens, that causes the water molecules to spread out more evenly into a transparent layer.

So to stop your lens from fogging up when wearing a mask:

1) Wash your hands with soap and water

2) Wash your lens with soap and water

3) Dry your lens with a material that will not scratch the surface.

Easy!
