Water main break causes sinkhole on Indy's far east side

The sinkhole formed on North German Church Road, south of East 21st Street on the far east side of Indianapolis Sunday morning.

INDIANAPOLIS — North German Church Road, just south of East 21st Street on Indy's east side, was closed Sunday morning after a water main break caused a sinkhole to form.

In a viewer-submitted photo, a utility truck can be seen shortly after it accidentally drove into the sinkhole. Citizens Energy says the water main break caused at least 40 houses to be temporarily without water. Water was fully restored by Sunday afternoon, according to Citizens Energy.

German Church Road was shut down in both directions for several hours, but eventually reopened to traffic later Sunday afternoon. No one was hurt by the sinkhole.
