Water line break causes flooding on Mass. Ave.

A water line break has closed Mass Ave from Alabama to Delaware.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — A water line break has closed Mass Ave from Alabama to Delaware. Repair crews hope to have the break fixed and the street open by 4 p.m. this afternoon.

The break occurred near the intersection of Delaware and North streets. At 9 a.m. water was continuing to flow into the streets.

Crews are digging their way down to a broken 4-inch supply line. It's connected to a 20-inch water main. The main is OK, but very old.

Citizens Energy Group says the pipes were installed 10 years after the Civil War ended.

"The water main here was installed in 1875," Citizens Energy spokesperson Dan Considine said. "The service, the lateral where the leak is, we are not sure. It is likely the same age. So it is just very old infrastructure in this area."

The broken supply line leads to a small three-story office building. Workers are getting by without water. Restaurants and other businesses are unaffected, for the most part. They have water, but with the street closed off, they may not have many customers.
