Volunteers pack hundreds of care packages for troops overseas

1,100 holiday care packages will soon be on their way to wounded servicemen and military members serving overseas, thanks to Hoosier volunteers.

WHITESTOWN, Ind. (WTHR) – 1,100 holiday care packages will soon be on their way to wounded servicemen and military members serving overseas, thanks to Hoosier volunteers.

The organization Hero Family Outreach has been collecting items for months to create packages to send to troops.

Saturday afternoon, about 60 volunteers spent hours putting together the packages to send out.

“It is simply to come together to help benefit fellow Americans that are out taking care of us,” Mark Robinson of Hero Family Outreach said.

325 packaged stockings will go to service members at Walter Reed Medical Center. Another 775 boxes will go to troops deployed around the world.

Each box is filled with candy, snacks and toiletries.

“I guarantee it, it means the world to every vet that is overseas, that somebody cares back home I guarantee it. It means the world,” volunteer Damon Byars said.

The packages will ship out in early December to arrive in time for Christmas.

Hero Family Outreach is actively collecting donations to pay for postage. Shipping for each package costs about $10.
