INDIANAPOLIS — Veterans Day weekend kicked off with the annual Veterans Day parade in downtown Indianapolis Friday.
The parade is one of the ways the community is honoring veterans and thanking them for their service.
The parade started at Michigan and Pennsylvania streets. The route took marchers down Pennsylvania Street, past the Indiana World War Memorial Plaza.
As service members made their way through downtown, people waved, cheered, and thanked the veterans for their service.
"It's a sight to see. It's overwhelming, really,” said Charles Davies, who said his grandfather served in World War II. “I have pictures of seeing my grandfather growing up. He would be 100 years old."
"We have so many veterans in the family and friends who are veterans,” said Tracy Davies. “They do so much that we don't see. There's so much going on in the world right now and the fact that they’re protecting us from afar means so much."
This is just one of many events that will be held this weekend to honor veterans in our community.
