Sheriff's deputies in Vanderburgh County in southwest Indiana will begin wearing body cameras in the next two weeks to record interactions with suspects, and the Evansville Police Department will also soon have body-worn cameras.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports that many community and law enforcement leaders support the move, saying the video provides an unbiased perspective. They say studies show it will reduce citizen complaints and incidents with use of force.
Vanderburgh County Sheriff Eric Williams says when his department receives allegations of wrongdoing or mistreatment, the issue is usually quickly settled if video is available.
The Concerned Clergy of Evansville asked the Evansville Police Department to supply its officers with body cameras. Police Chief Bill Bolin says the department will use drug seizure money to buy cameras.
