Van crashes into southeast Indy home, feet from sleeping grandmother; driver and passengers flee

Police are looking for a driver caught on camera swerving across the 4000 block of South Post Road.

INDIANAPOLIS — Police are investigating after a van crashed into a home in the 4000 block of South Post Road, across from the Franklin Township Little League Field on the far southeast side of Indianapolis.

A couple was sleeping on the other side of the wall the van slammed into shortly after 7 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16.

"My husband and I were upstairs. My grandma and grandpa were downstairs asleep, and the house felt like a bomb went off," Jennifer Clark said.

Clark said her husband told her someone hit the house. But by the time the family got outside, the van was abandoned.

"We came outside and there was a van in the front of the house, so there was nobody there. It was a hit-and-run for us," Clark said.

A driver a few cars behind the van caught the entire crash on dashcam video and shared it with 13News.

The video shows the van veer off the right side of the road. The driver attempted to regain control but veered to the left, across the double yellow line, and slammed into the home.

The video also shows the driver, who appeared to be wearing a safety vest, exit the van and walk away. Other people also exited the van.

Clark said the impact narrowly missed her grandmother.

"Her bed is not up against the wall, but her head is right at the wall. And grandpa sleeps on the other side of this bedroom," Clark said.

It was a close call that now has this family thankful to be alive. They are now asking how this could have happened and why the driver left the scene.

Anyone with additional information on the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
