INDIANAPOLIS — Police are investigating after a van crashed through a wall into a classroom at an elementary school on Indianapolis' southwest side Wednesday morning.
Shortly before 6 a.m., first responders were called to Stephen Decatur Elementary, near Foltz Street and West Mooresville Road, for a report of a car that had crashed into a building.
At the scene they found a van that had crashed through a brick wall near a side entrance to the school, into a classroom.
No people were inside the school at the time, and two people in the car made it out on their own and did not require transport to the hospital, a Decatur Township Fire Department spokesperson told 13News.
The spokesperson said the van had been traveling south on Mooresville Road prior to the crash and may have experienced brake issues.
The building was deemed structurally sound, and the van was removed by 7 a.m.
A MSD Decatur Township spokesperson told 13News that all district schools are closed Wednesday for Thanksgiving break.
"The incident is under investigation, so there are no other details available," the spokesperson said in a statement.
The school will welcome back students and staff Monday, Nov. 27, according to MSD of Decatur Township administrator Emily LeMay.
"We are relieved that school was not in session and that no one was injured," LeMay said. "The entire Stephen Decatur school community will work together to ensure a smooth transition for the students and teacher into their new classroom location."
