The gas station at 38th and Lafayette Road was a battle ground. According to investigators gunmen concealed in a neighboring dark parking lot, opened up with assault rifles Those under attack, fired back. IMPD public information officer Rafael Diaz said there were plenty of witnesses, "As soon as police arrived, everyone scattered."
A woman, a mother of five was shot.
A man, a father of three was run over as he crawled to safety.
Family members say 28-year-old Tamara Sword, a mother of five was killed in the cross fire.
Her dad drove here from Chicago. Andrew Holmes looked over the crime scene, "I cried all the way here. That's my daughter. When it hits home, it hits home. It damn sure hit home now."
As investigators processed the crime scene for evidence, Otis Riggins watched in agony. His son crawled beneath a car to dodge the gunfire.
It's driver, trying to escape accidentally ran over Joshua killing the 28-year-old man.
"This violence is over the top. Over the top," he said. "Then something like this happens and my son is laying there under a car and I can't get to him," Riggins apologized for sobbing.
Police believe the motive for the shooting began at a 38th street night club a few blocks away, with a disagreement, an altercation.
Those involved were told to leave.
At the crime scene, evidence technicians found scores of spend shell casings. One wild shot pierced the window of a fast food restaurant across the street.
One car had bullet holes in its front, side and rear windows.
As lawmen picked up pieces of the violence, outside the crime scene tape, 20 feet way, members of The People's Church were setting for their monthly clothing give away.
Brenda McAllister was undeterred. "We need to come together as one and start loving and being concerned about one another again." said the church member, "We use to have that a long time ago."
Police managed to corral a number of witnesses. Most they said were uncooperative. But security cameras recorded the shooting. Detectives will be looking at the video as they look for those responsible.
