City orders Muncie Inn vacated for being 'unsafe building'

The city is citing multiple code violations, safety risks, and fire hazards in ordering the owner to vacate the building.

MUNCIE, Ind. — The city of Muncie has ordered the owner of the Muncie Inn to vacate the building.

Resident complaints led the city to inspect the Muncie Inn, located at 414 N. Madison Street.

The city claims there were multiple code violations, safety risks and fire hazards. It was then tagged as an "unsafe building."

City officials said they are working with homelessness providers to create space for the people staying in the 44 rooms at the Muncie Inn.

Frank Baldwin, chair of the Indiana Region 6 Housing Consortium, said moving people to an emergency shelter will allow the people to qualify for permanent housing programs.

A sign on the door, dated Jan. 24, gave 10 days for the building to be vacated.

Anyone impacted by the Muncie Inn closure can contact The HUB at 765-282-3948 for more assistance.
