ANDERSON, Ind. (WTHR) – Anderson police have arrested two teens connected to a shooting Saturday night.
19-year-old Orlando Sutton and 18-year-old Michael Flemming are charged with murder, attempted murder and attempted robbery.
It happened in the 800 block of W. 12th Street.
This incident is one of four murders in Madison county in about a week.
Tuesday night, the police cars and the crime scene were gone but on 12th Street, neighbor Jessica Cooley still remembers.
"I was just scared for whoever it was and just still am. I pray for the families," said Cooley.
Anderson folks call this "such a quiet street."
But the silence was broken by gunfire about 10 p.m. Saturday.
A great grandmother working in her driveway Tuesday night said, "What? I thought it was fireworks."
What she heard was the gunfire that ended 19-year-old Bryce Paterson’s life, in an alleged holdup gone wrong. His friend was wounded.
"These are families around here," said Cooley. "It’s quiet, no nonsense going on. Just heartbreaking."
Cooley instantly hoped her own children were okay. Murder is more than a statistic for this Anderson mom.
Last week her cousin David Phillips was murdered. His body was found in Madison County Rangeline Nature Preserve. Trinity Parker, a woman Phillips knew, was also shot and killed.
Four suspects are charged in those killings.
"We pray for justice and we pray that someone has a heart and feels remorseful and tells the truth," said Cooley for her cousin David.
She and others on 12th Street also hope that plans for a new grassroots attack on violent crime are successful.
In Indianapolis, the Ten Point Coalition walks troubled streets and reaches out to make neighbors part of the solution.
An Anderson pastor is looking at a similar approach here.
"Maybe it would help if the ministries would get together and try to figure out something, talk about something that could happen," says the great grandmother.
She thinks getting kids to church would help too.
"There’s way too many people getting killed," said another neighbor who didn't want to be identified. "And I’m not just saying by guns, but by other means. Drug overdoses. And everything."
She hopes a grassroots approach can help too.
Back at Jessica's house, deaths are remembered on this concerned mother’s front porch.
"As for Trinity's family, as for Bryce Patterson's family, I feel sorry for all of them. I pray for all of them," said Cooley.
