MORGAN COUNTY - Two brothers are going toe to toe running against each other for the same council seat. Their square-off is taking place in Bethany Park, a tiny town between Martinsville and Mooresville in Morgan County.
The town of Bethany Park, Indiana does not have a police department, or a fire department.
"There is really not a whole lot of excitement in Bethany," said Walt Worley, Bethany Park Town Council.
There is a four-member town council, and two of the councilors are brothers, Charles and Walt Worley. Charles, the eldest, lived in Ward 3 and Walt lived in Ward 4. Both were elected to the council in 1996 and through the years they have had a few minor disagreements.
"We get along. We don't have any major disputes or nothing. Typical brothers," said Walt.
But then Charles moved into a house right next to the Bethany Town Hall and right into his brothers' district.
"Brothers will be brothers, I guess," said Walt.
The move forces the first contested race for a council seat since the brother joined the council.
It has been more than 15 years since they had a town council election in Bethany. In the last election, less than 55 people voted. This time around there are 46 registered voters in the entire town.
"I am going to go vote but I would rather not say who I'm voting for," said Roger Hacker, Bethany Park resident.
Charles declined Eyewitness News' request for an interview, and apparently he declined his brother's request for an explanation on why he moved, or why he is running for the council.
"You would have to ask him that question yourself. He has never told me, so I really couldn't answer that," said Walt.
Bethany as a town has come to an important crossroads. A wooded area was once a historical lake that attracted thousands of tourists. The new town council will be tasked with its renovation.
There are less than 40 homes in Bethany Park. With 46 registered voters, elections are not cheap. The cost to hold this election is $2,600. Counting all 46 voters, that's about $55 per person.
