INDIANAPOLIS — Some of the biggest moments of the 2024 Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration are happening over the next few days.
That includes the Music Heritage Festival.
This year, Indiana Black Expo is celebrating 53 years.
"I think it's one of the best things going on in the country," one woman said.
There's a full lineup of events this year, and many of them are free.
Doors of the Indiana Convention Center will open Friday, June 28 at noon for the exhibit hall and Day 2 of the health fair.
"Who can say they have had 53 years of Black excellence and putting together a successful community event that everybody looks forward to every year and every summer?" said Edward Rogers, director of youth and family programs.
Later, people can dance the night away at the outdoor concert, held for the first time at Carroll Stadium on IUPUI's campus.
"I'm excited. I'm looking forward to new scenery and a new environment. I think the community will be surprised and will like the new venue it will be at. I'm excited to see it all come together," Rogers said. "You don't need your lawn chairs no more. You don't need your tents. Just bring your food and your coolers and refreshments."
This year, people will need a ticket for the concert. Prices range from $10 to $100, and there are still some available. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.
One woman told 13News she's going to get hers. She said she hasn't missed a concert in 30 years and doesn't plan to start now. She said she loves to be part of the crowd and is excited to see Johnny Gill.
"The good music, being with the people, checking out the styles and having fun," she said. "We have one of the best Black expos — if not the best. I'm proud, and I hope it lasts forever and ever and ever."
