New Castle - Three men are facing charges for stealing doughnuts in Henry County.
Drivers for Jack's Donuts in New Castle roll up to local stores every morning and drop off their doughnuts. If the store isn't open, they just leave them outside.
"Small towns like this, I guess, you're used to trusting people than what you are in a big city," said owner Lee Marcum.
But lately, before stores could get around to opening, police say three 20-year-old men - Josh Maloyed, Brad Reno and Shannon Mullins - stole the dropped donuts several times from three stores. The theft disappointed customers and left store owners like Eric Counsellar in a hole.
For several mornings, Counsellar sat in his car and watched the store until a theft went down.
"It happened. Right hand door opened up, grabbed them, took off down south on Main," he said.
Counsellar called 911 as he followed the stolen dough and police arrested the suspects.
"That's bad," said one customer. "I just can't believe they hid in the bushes at 3 o'clock in the morning."
A friend of two of the suspects the men were "just bored."
"[They] wanted to play a prank on a friend who worked at the donut shop. They didn't mean to get in no trouble," the friend said.
But the donut store owner doesn't think the prank was very funny.
"It is a big deal and I'm glad to see them pay for what they've done," Marcum said.
