INDIANAPOLIS — Several organizations across Indianapolis are preparing to feed thousands of people on Thanksgiving day. However, in order to serve those meals, they need your help.
Wheeler Mission in downtown Indianapolis is one of several organizations preparing for Thanksgiving, and right now, they say they need food donations and volunteers.
"We really need fresh vegetables, even canned vegetables, those are big for us. Fresh meats as well," said Brian Crispin, with Wheeler Mission, which expects to feed more than 1,000 Hoosiers on the holiday.
Crispin said, so far, they've been getting many donations such as canned soup and vegetables. The nonprofit even received more than 200 turkeys from Brebeuf Jesuit and Carmel hockey clubs to feed families.
"So men, women and children are coming to our sites, we'll serve meals for free, and so if you need a meal or can't afford a meal, you're not staying in our shelters, come on down for a free meal," Crispin said.
Over on the west side of Indianapolis, the team at the Mozel Sanders Foundation is preparing for their annual Thanksgiving dinner.
"We look to feed about 10,000 people," said Stephen Sanders, CEO of the Mozel Sanders Foundation.
They, too, are looking for donations and volunteers, but this year, they won't be serving turkey.
"Due to the cost and that bird flu that's still plaguing turkeys around the state, the chicken is our best option, and we don't want anyone getting sick," Sanders said.
While the clocks tick until the oven rings done, these organizations are just hoping everyone can pull together and give back.
"Thanksgiving's a special day of the year, and we want to make sure everyone is greeted with a smile, a hug and a nice, warm, nutritious meal," Crispin said.
The Mozel Sanders Foundation said families looking for a meal need to register by 11:59 p.m. Nov. 15. You can do so by calling 317-636-7985.
