RICHMOND, Ind. (WTHR) - The coroner confirms the shooter was Brandon Clegg.
Police say Clegg exchanged gunfire with officers before killing himself Thursday.
Clegg forced a male relative to drive him to school, according to witnesses. They also say his mother called to warn police the teen was on the way with a gun.
“She had to know when she made the call that there was always the risk she would lose a child," said Lori Sorenson. "I appreciate her sacrificing so much and she’s in my prayers."
Dennis Intermediate School will remain closed until Tuesday, December 18. Police have released the school back to the district after clearing the crime scene.
The superintendent said during a Friday news conference that there has been counseling services offered to staff and students.
"At this point we have not yet had time to talk about what did happen or maybe what should have happened with the response," said Todd Terrill, Superintendent.
There was a Wayne County deputy at the school working as a school resource officer at the time of the shooting. Three other school resources at other schools also responded.
The superintendent says it was unbelievable the response from police agencies and active-shooter training made a difference.
A teacher made the call to lockdown the school before Clegg arrived at the school according to the superintendent.
All student were reunited with their parents within six hours of the shooting.
"We have to bring a sense of normalcy back to our community," said Terrill.
Plans for Dennis Intermediate School in the final days before the holiday break will be posted to the school's website on Monday and on social media.
