Fishers - Members of a Fishers hockey club are gathering Saturday to remember a 16-year-old player who collapsed and died during a game Friday night.
It's unclear what caused Stephen Scotton to fall on the ice in a game against Columbus in the first round of the Hoosier High School Tournament at the Forum at Fishers ice rink.
Steve Scotton's locker stall is nearly empty only a single board with a simple message remain.
"Steve Scotton was a kid that always had a smile on his face, he was a jokester yano again, a real solid, solid kid that loved to play the game of hockey," said Mike Berger.
Friday night the 16-year-old Fishers High School junior lost his life while doing what he loved.
Coach Mike Berger was standing just feet away when Scotton fell.
"It was right here, right at these hash marks and he just went down," said Berger.
It was the first period of the game and for no apparent reason the athletic, and seemingly healthy teen dropped to the ice.
Berger explained, "There was immediate care given to him and then 911 was called and they got the ambulance over here and they did what they could on the ice."
Fishers medics tried to revive Scotton but they were unsuccessful. He taken to the Indiana Heart Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"We're going to miss him, we're going to miss him a lot. There's a pretty big void there," said Berger.
Scotton's hockey jersey now hangs as a memorial to a teen who spent years of his life working and playing at the ice rink a part of it is now gone.
Berger said, "We're a pretty tight-knit family, the hockey world is a tight-knit family and again, we're destroyed. It's something that's going to take a long time to get over "
Friday night's game was suspended. The entire high school tournament has been postponed until next weekend.
