Teen dies in crash involving police car in Marion

It happened shortly after 11:00 p.m. on State Road 18 at Washington St. in Marion.

MARION, Ind. (WTHR) - Police in Grant County are investigating a traffic accident that left one Marion teen dead and another in critical condition late Friday.

State Police say the crash occurred shortly after 11:00 p.m. on State Road 18/3rd Street at Washington St. in Marion.

According to Marion Police, an officer called for assistance with a traffic stop at 3rd Street and Western Avenue. Two officers responded with lights and sirens activated.

As the officers were westbound on 3rd Street, a white Pontiac coming south on Washington Street collided with one of the police cars.

State Police say the 2004 Pontiac Grand Am, driven by Payton Rogers, 18, of Marion ran a red light.

Rogers was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her passenger, 18-year-old Baleeve Gregory of Marion, was flown via Lutheran Medical Helicopter to a Ft Wayne hospital with a head injury.

The officer involved in the crash also went to the hospital in Marion to be evaluated, according to Indiana State Police.

The crash is under investigation.
