WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A suspect was arrested in West Lafayette for alleged sexual battery.

West Lafayette Police Department officers responded to the West Lafayette Post Office on a report of sexual battery Saturday, Oct. 28.

Officers spoke with a female who said a man approached her in a Walmart and asked for her help finding the local post office. The suspect convinced the victim to drive to the post office while he followed in his own vehicle, according to WLPD.

When they got to the post office, the man allegedly reached into her car and assaulted her by touching her in a sexual manner. The woman fought back and began honking her horn for help. A good Samaritan saw what was happening and pulled the suspect away from the car.

According to WLPD, the victim credited her training in the Rape Aggression Defense Women's Self Defense Program in her safety and sense to alert others nearby.

The suspect tried to drive away but was stopped by police officers nearby.

He is preliminarily charged with sexual battery, battery and unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle.

(NOTE: 13News does not name suspects until charges have been filed by prosecutors.)

WLPD said it is possible this person has attempted or committed similar acts that have not been reported to the police.

Police are asking for anyone with information on this subject, or anyone else who has potentially been victimized by this person, to call them at (765)775-5200 or use the anonymous WeTip Hotline by calling 800-78-CRIME.
