Stretch of US 52 renamed in honor of fallen IMPD officer Breann Leath

The Officer Breann Leath Memorial Mile will run from German Church Road to Davis Road on Indy's east side.

INDIANAPOLIS — It's been just over four years since IMPD Officer Breann Leath was killed in the line of duty responding to a domestic disturbance.

This past legislative session, Indiana lawmakers passed a resolution to honor Leath with a stretch of road on the east side of the city along US Highway 52.

The Officer Breann Leath Memorial Mile will run from German Church Road to Davis Road, on one end the area where Leath worked as an officer, on the other the part of town where she grew up.

Friday, dozens of Leath's fellow officers came out to see the signs for the memorial mile unveiled.

State Representative Mitch Gore spearheaded the effort in the legislature to get the road renamed in memory of Leath.

"Bree, by all accounts was the epitome of a true public servant, doing it for the right reason," said Gore.

"Since the day she was taken from us, I can honestly say there's not a day that goes by that I don't think about her and that don't think about that day," said IMPD East District Commander Michael Leepper, adding that the scars from the day Leath was killed would be with many of her fellow officers the rest of their lives.

"If she was standing here today, her message to me would not be, to cry for me or to say what I did," Leeper said.

Instead, Leepper said Leath would want him to encourage the officers who are still here, working to protect the community.

Leath's mother Jenny had a message for them.

"I just want the officers to know, I told Breann to make your life count. Growing up, I told the girls to make it matter and I know that her sacrifice meant something. Stuff like this just backs that up," said Leath's mom.
