Storm 'blew up out of nowhere' | Kokomo elementary school damaged by wind, rain

A school official said one teacher was inside the building Friday when the storm hit but no one was injured.

KOKOMO, Ind. — Storms with high winds and heavy rain left a Kokomo elementary school with significant damage Friday afternoon.

About one-quarter of the Taylor Elementary School building, located at 5500 Wea Drive, was hit, according to Steve Dishon, superintendent of Taylor Community School Corporation.

Dishon told 13News the storm that "blew up out of nowhere" and ripped the rubber roof from parts of the building, causing water to pour inside.

One teacher was inside the building at the time of the storm, but there were no reported injuries.

The extent of the damage is still being determined, according to Dishon. Efforts were underway to clear water from the interior and to salvage the floor of the gymnasium.

The school system is considering seeking an attendance waiver from the state for Monday, but Dishon said he hopes to limit missed instructional time.
