INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Hundreds of women took part in the Indianapolis women's half marathon and 5K Saturday, including a survivor who once faced some devastating injuries.

Andrea Vellinga was training for this race five years ago when she was critically injured in the State Fair stage collapse. Her skull was crushed and she was in a coma for weeks.

But now she can work and drive a car, and Saturday she proved she can run.

"At first I signed up for this and thought, 'A half marathon? No big deal.' But I visited with people with traumatic brain injuries and I see where they are. And I didn't realize where I was versus where I am now, and oh my gosh. Now I see why it's such a big deal. I mean, I have accomplished something," Vellinga said.

Andrea ran side-by-side with one of the nurses who cared for her at Methodist Hospital.
