INDIANAPOLIS — The Mass Ave Starbucks location in downtown Indianapolis has become the seventh location in the state to unionize.

Workers at the store, near Alabama Street, voted Wednesday night 13-3 to join the group Starbucks Workers United, which is affiliated with the Workers United Labor Union.

The group says its workers are working to gain "protections on core issues like respect, living wages, racial and gender equity, and fair scheduling."

Starbucks Workers United said that since 2021, more than 450 stores in 44 states and the District of Columbia have successfully unionized — more than any other company in the 21st century.

"Workers United-represented partners met Starbucks at the bargaining table again last month as they continue to make progress on a foundational framework that is intended to form the basis of store contracts," the group said in a statement. "Hundreds of delegates representing all union stores are engaged in the bargaining process."

According to Starbucks Workers United, the Mass Ave location is the first in Indianapolis to vote to unionize. Two locations in Plainfield – 2671 E. Main St. and 5050 Cambridge Way – have unionized.
