SPEEDWAY, Ind — Friday is a big day for businesses in Marion County.
Moving to “stage four” means many places that had been closed can now open at reduced capacity.
It puts things back on track at Speedway Indoor Karting.
They were racing again in Speedway Friday, but not at the famous oval. Sarah Fisher's kart enterprise was back in business after a three-month closure.
“We are so excited to be open again and see people in the building, wanting to get out and do things and be in the community,” Fisher told 13News. "We were closed since that March 16 shutdown.”
The business spent big money on updates to make sure the environment is clean and safe for their customers.
“We’ve installed two big standing helmet boxes so every time the helmets come off the track, they go to be disinfected and sanitized, each individual one, before it gets put back on the shelf.”
Fisher said customers could also buy full-face balaclavas and “very, very reasonably-priced helmets” at the facility if they preferred.
“We’ve rearranged our lobby so that it accommodates social distancing. There’s no furniture. There is plexiglas to help our associates and our point of sale folks,” Fisher added.
The track should be running full speed by August, just in time for fans arriving for the postponed Indianapolis 500.
“August is going to be busy,” Fisher said with a smile. “We’re thrilled. The month of May here and in the town of Speedway, it’s huge, one of our big staple months, that and Christmas, so to have the reschedule is an incredible opportunity for us. We are so thankful that they rescheduled events instead of canceling like so many other big events did.”
