Southport police officer recovering after accidently being exposed to fentanyl during traffic stop

Officers said Lt. Tony Wilson was able to call for medical help before losing consciousness.

INDIANAPOLIS — A Southport police officer is recovering after accidently being exposed to fentanyl during a traffic stop.

Police said Lt. Tony Wilson conducted a traffic stop at a gas station and arrested the driver for not having a driver's license.

During a search of the vehicle, officers said Wilson found a folded one-dollar bill, which, upon further inspection, contained fentanyl.

Wilson was exposed to and overdosed on fentanyl while trying to radio for help. Fortunately, he was able to call for medical help before losing consciousness.

"Thanks to the quick response of Indianapolis Fire Department Engine 26 and the exceptional medical care provided by Community South Hospital, Lt. Wilson's life was saved. We sincerely thank the Indianapolis Fire Department and Community South Hospital for their heroic efforts," the Southport Police Department said in a news release.

Wilson is currently recovering and is expected to make a full recovery.
