BROWNSTOWN, Ind. — A southern Indiana motorcyclist was killed following a Wednesday afternoon crash in Jackson County.

According to a release from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, shortly after 1:30 p.m. on July 3, officers received a call about a serious motorcycle crash with injury just east of State Road 39, near the intersection of County Road 300 East and County Road 300 South, in Brownstown Township.

The rider of the motorcycle was identified as 66-year-old Kim C. Kaufmann of Vallonia. A member of the Jackson County Coroner's Office pronounced Kaufmann dead at the scene.

According to an initial investigation by police, Kaufmann was reportedly traveling westbound on CR 300 South and had just passed a passenger car before attempting to pass a dump truck. Kaufmann reportedly lost control of the motorcycle during the attempted pass of the dump truck and struck a mailbox before being ejected.

Police say an autopsy is set for July 5.
