Six bodies recovered in deadly Logansport fire including children

Six people, including four children, are dead after a house fire in Logansport and investigators believe it may have been set intentionally.

LOGANSPORT, Ind. (WTHR) — Investigators are releasing new information on a deadly house fire in Logansport that killed six people, including four children.

Investigators have recovered six bodies from the home on Pottawatomie Road, including a 42-year-old man and his 10-year-old daughter, also a 25-year-old woman and her three children: 3-month-old boy, 1-year-old girl and a 3-year-old girl.

The family provided Eyewitness News images of the mother Brandi Vail and some of the children.

A source from Cass County at the scene tells us there is reason to believe Wednesday morning's fire was set intentionally.

Investigators say they are approaching this as a criminal investigation.

Police had been investigating a possible connection to a death in Carroll County. However, police have since told Eyewitness News that the two appear to be unrelated.

The children who died ranged in ages from 2 months to 10 years old, the Pharos Tribune reported.

The call of a fire on Pottawatamie Road along the Wabash River came in just before 2 a.m. Both the Logansport Fire Department and the New Waverly Fire Department responded to the fire.

Cass County Sheriff Randy Pryors said two other adults, who police believe to be the wife and the son of the 42-year-old man who died in the fire, made it out of the home and told firefighters about the other six who didn't make it out. The two who escaped the fire were taken to Logansport Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A Cass County sheriff's deputy told Pharos-Tribune reporter Mitchell Kirk he was the first to arrive and climbed on the roof to try to break windows and get into the home, but the flames were too intense. That deputy said he did not hear smoke alarms when he tried to get into the home.

Firefighters also had to deal with ammunition in the home, going off in the fire. No firefighters were injured.
