It's been a while since Indiana has felt a powerful earthquake.

But today, you can experience what it's like to be right in the middle of one.

The Indiana Geological Survey will have an earthquake simulator at the Statehouse.

Walter Gray with the Indiana Geological Survey said the simulator takes people through three earthquakes — a magnitude 3, magnitude 5.5 and magnitude 7.

"We've had 44 earthquakes above a magnitude 3 since 1817," Gray said of Indiana. "Since they happen so infrequently, we tend to be a little too complacent. So, our citizens are not as prepared as they probably should be."

The public is invited to try out the simulator from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. today at the Statehouse. Participants must register at the Statehouse, but the simulator is free.
