Shop for Kids board honors ISP Superintendent Doug Carter with scholarship in his name

ISP said Carter played a key role in creating the Shop for Kids program, which provides a Christmas shopping experience for Hamilton County families in need.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind — Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter has been recognized by board members of the Shop for Kids program. On Monday, the board announced creation of a scholarship in Carter's name. 

The announcement was made at the conclusion of an annual fundraising golf event supporting Shop for Kids.

The $1,000 scholarship will be available to a Hamilton Heights High School student each year for the next 10 years. Criteria for the award is still under consideration by Hamilton Heights Schools Superintendent Dr. Derek Arrowwood and Carter, according to the board.

"For more than 40 years, Doug Carter has been a public safety staple in the Cicero community and has offered tremendous support to Hamilton Heights schools. We are proud to honor his legacy with this scholarship and look forward to helping students achieve their goals," said Dustin Dixon, a Shop for Kids board member.

During his time as Hamilton County sheriff, Carter played a key role in the formation of Shop for Kids, the board said. The program, which began in 2008. provides "a Christmas shopping experience for Hamilton County families in need."

"Rarely am I at a loss for words," Carter said Monday. "Shop for Kids and Hamilton Heights providing this opportunity to me is profoundly humbling. Serving this community has been my greatest honor and I look forward to working with Dr. Arrowwood to find the most effective use for this scholarship."
