Sheriff's Deputy Jacob Pickett dies after being shot in the line of duty

Sheriff Mike Nielsen shared on Facebook Deputy Pickett died around 3:30 a.m. Monday.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen confirmed Deputy Jacob Pickett passed around 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Nielsen shared this message on Facebook:

Pickett was shot while helping serve a warrant Friday. Police believe 21-year-old Anthony Baumgardt shot him.

Baumgardt, who was also shot, was released from the hospital Saturday and booked into the Boone County Jail. He was later transferred to the Hamilton County Jail.

Baumgardt has been charged on six counts:

  • Murder
  • Resisting law enforcement
  • Carrying a handgun without a license
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Possession of methamphetamine (two counts)

Doctors kept Pickett alive for more than two days so his organs could be donated.

Police will lead a procession from St. Vincent Hospital to the Marion County Coroner's Office Monday morning.

Funeral services are planned for Friday.
