Sheriff: Don't call 911 for fireworks complaints

Police are reminding residents not to call 911 to complain about their neighbors' fireworks.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Police are reminding residents not to call 911 to complain about their neighbors' fireworks.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said fireworks complaints fall in the category of non-emergency incidents that should be reported by dialing 311 instead. That list also includes noise complaints, barking dogs and found animals, parking violations, lost or stolen property and juvenile runaway reports, among others.

The department said calling 311 for those issues will keep the 911 line free for emergencies, including all fire and medical problems, drunk or reckless drivers, in-progress crime, accidents and other incidents where someone is endangered.

It should be noted the 311 number is for cell phones only. If you're calling from a landline phone, dial 317-327-3811 to reach Marion County dispatchers.

Other agencies' non-emergency numbers:

  • Speedway: 317-246-4300
  • Lawrence: 317-545-7575
