INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Severe storms caused damage across central Indiana Wednesday evening.
The storms spurred a tornado warning near Cloverdale shortly after 6:30 p.m. after radar indicated rotation.
Around the same time, severe storms triggered warnings in several other counties in the area, with reports of heavy rain, high winds and hail.
The powerful winds left a trail of damage and led to a rescue operation outside a Boone County elementary school. A woman called 911 after a power line came down on part of her car, which also had a child inside. Police say they were unhurt.
A power line was also downed along State Road 75 south of Granville Wells Elementary School. The sheriff's department says there was no damage to the school and classes will go on as scheduled Thursday.
The sheriff's department does say, however, that damage will cause closures on State Road 75 that are expected to last most of Thursday.
"We did have a car that had a pole on it at the time. The two passengers, a female and a child, were fine. We made phone contact with them and they let us know they had no injuries," said Boone County Sheriff's Deputy Ken Conley. "When Duke Energy arrived to check the lines to make sure that they did not have power before they even tried to get them out of the car."
A home in Advance suffered heavy hail damage in the storm. Some parts of central Indiana reported hail larger than a golf ball in size.
Kokomo residents say the strong storms moved through quickly, but managed to make quite a mark. The siding was ripped off one house, a basketball goal blown over, and a tree cracked, almost hitting the roof.
In Lebanon, a shopper at Walmart recorded video of hail coming through a skylight in the roof that had been broken by the storm.
