7 Indy City-County councilors named to investigative committee to dig into harassment claims

It comes one day after the council approved the investigative committee with a vote of 22-1.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis City-County Council’s minority and majority leaders selected seven councilors — five Democrats and two Republicans — to serve on an investigative committee on Tuesday.

It comes just a day after the council approved the investigative committee with a vote of 22-1.

The seven committee members will look into handling of sexual harassment complaints by Mayor Joe Hogsett's administration and his campaign.

They are expected to review the city's policies and hire an outside firm to conduct the investigation.

City-County Council Majority Leader Maggie Lewis selected five Democratic councilors to the committee: Rena Allen, Crista Carlino, Kristin Jones, Jessica McCormick and Andy Nielsen.

“I believe all of our colleagues are committed to this issue but with those individuals specifically, we know they have the time to do a deep dive into the work that’s going to come before them,” Lewis said.

Minority Leader Brian Mowery named two Republican councilors: himself and Josh Bain.

“It’s something we are going to take very seriously. We are going to make sure that we really vet every avenue of information and make sure that we look at everything we need to,” Mowery said. “We need to look into this in a serious matter and make sure we are taking the necessary steps to try and prevent this in the future.”

It's been more than a decade since the council formed an investigative committee. The last time was in 2013 over concerns about the city's handling of the Regional Operations Center, known as "The ROC."
