INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A federal judge in Indianapolis is stepping down.

Senior U.S. District Judge William Lawrence's retirement is effective Sunday.

Lawrence was sworn in as a judge for the Southern District of Indiana on June 26, 2008. His appointment by President George W. Bush followed his service as a magistrate judge in the Southern District, a position he had held since November 2002. Lawrence was the first magistrate judge in the Southern District to become a district judge.

Prior to becoming a magistrate judge, Lawrence was an elected judge of the Marion County Circuit Court from 1996 to 2002.

A retirement ceremony will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Birch Bayh Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Indianapolis.
