City seeks community input on plans for $80 million in Indy Parks upgrades

The funding to update 58 local facilities comes from a Lilly Endowment grant.

INDIANAPOLIS — There are big plans in store for recreation around Indianapolis, as an $80 million Lilly Endowment grant will enhance 58 local parks.

On Thursday, June 6, community members joined an open house to look at two in particular, Paul Ruster and Hanover parks.

People were able to choose the playground designs they want to see in their neighborhood.

Those involved with the planning process say they hope these enhancements enrich the community's experience.

"First of all, it's the kids that are the most fun, right? Because they're the ones who are going to be using this the most, and it's interesting to hear them talk about what excites them the most. Hearing that feedback from them in this process has been really fantastic," said Joseph Jarzen, client liaison for Schmidt Associates.

Parks Department officials told 13News they usually receive around $5 million in grants per year, so to receive $75 million more than they typically get is a huge help.
