Second Helpings hosts sold out crowd for 'Souper Bowls'

The fundraiser helps pays for 5,000 meals and equipment needed to make them.

INDIANAPOLIS — Dozens of local chefs came together Saturday for Second Helpings' "Souper Bowls."

It's a friendly competition, and the biggest prize is being able to feed thousands of central Indiana families.

"It's a fantastic thing that draws in so much money that helps us get food out to the public," said Michael Gilson, kitchen coordinator.

The money earned from tickets and donations pays for 5,000 meals and equipment needed to make them.

"We do take a lot of donations, but it's also a monetary thing," Gilson said. "We have food trucks, buildings to take care of. We can't work with the agencies if we don't have the right equipment, so it's a huge help for all of us."

This year's winner, Charlie Chapel, is a graduate of the Culinary Job Training Program and has seen firsthand the impact Second Helpings has made.

"It's amazing," she said. "To be able to feed thousands of people every day who otherwise wouldn't eat is amazing."

Whether someone tried a home favorite or something new, local chefs brought unique flavors to the table.
