'It's a joy' | Santa Claus greets families at Indianapolis airport for 13th year in a row

Jolly Old St. Nick stopped by the Indianapolis International Airport Saturday to say hello to more than 1,200 Hoosier families and children.

INDIANAPOLIS — It's the holiday season, and Santa Claus is making his rounds early!

Jolly Old St. Nick stopped by the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) on Saturday, Nov. 30 to say hello to more than 1,200 Hoosier families and children gathered at the airport's Civic Plaza.

This is his 13th year holding this event at the Indy airport.

“It’s that kind spirit that draws me to the Indianapolis International Airport each year,” said Santa. “Indy airport employees are always at the top of my Nice list because they deliver exceptional customer service and that special holiday magic year-round.”

Those who attended the sold-out event got to meet elves, the Grinch and the Sugar Plum Fairy. They also got to have their photos taken with Santa, create ornaments, wrap care packages, write letters to Santa and enjoy other festive activities.

“Santa’s endorsement means the world to us, but more importantly it’s an honor to have him return year over year to bring his world-class holiday cheer to our Hoosier families and children who love this event,” said Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriguez.

Airport officials said passengers will be able to enjoy the decorations throughout the terminal.

In addition to decorations, there will be special performances at the airport from local musicians and school groups from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 13 – Dec. 26. Featured performances include the Castlewood Singers, klezmer music from Indy Klez, Pavel & Direct Contact, Jan Aldridge Clark and national finalists from the Young Hoosier Pianists.

“It’s a joy to have so many Hoosier families join us again to watch Santa make his annual practice run and enjoy the airport’s largest community event of the year together,” said Megan Carrico, IAA senior director of public affairs. “It’s the perfect start to the holiday season and a joyful note of what’s still to come in holiday celebrations at the Indy airport.”
