Indianapolis - After two years, the same sex marriage question is back before state lawmakers. This time, a proposed constitutional amendment could let the voters decide.

The Senate Chamber was the scene of three hours of debate on a proposed amendment to ban same sex marriage in Indiana. The General Assembly approved the constitutional amendment two years ago but need to win approval this session before it can be up for a statewide vote.

"I ask you that you not allow a judge to put asunder what God has brought together," said Rev. Andy Hurt.

Amendment supporters like Sen. Brandt Hershman say the amendment is needed to protect the sanctity of traditional marriage.

"I trust Hoosiers to make the right decision," said Sen. Hershman (R-Wheatfield).

"I can't see how anyone would be harmed. Would it make happy marriages more happy and troubled marriages more troubled?" said Mary Ann Cantwell.

Opponents believe the measure could have unintended consequences that could effect all unmarried Hoosiers. They say some marriage amendments in other states are so broadly written that they effectively eliminate companies from offering benefits to employees' same sex or live-in partners. Opponents also point to live-in partners losing the protection of domestic violence laws.

"I am confused how the state of Indiana. The place I have come to call home is now turning its back on me. The resolution says I as a gay male am not welcome here in Indiana," said Eric Kanagy.

The resolution passed out of committee by a 7-4 vote and is now headed to the full Senate.
