Saint Lucas Loft Apartments set to open on Indy's near east side

Thanks to investments by Indianapolis and Englewood CDC, new affordable housing is coming at the corner of New York St. and Rural St.

INDIANAPOLIS — Dozens of Hoosiers have a new place to call home. It's all thanks to an investment from the City of Indianapolis and local organizations.

On July 10, city leaders unveiled the new Saint Lucas Lofts Apartments on the near east side at the intersection of New York and Rural streets.

"These are pretty nice. They're pretty reasonable, nice appliances," Johnae Allen said.

Johnae Allen is looking for a place she can call home. She stopped by, looking to put in an application.

This new building comes with 48 units, complete with a gym, laundry rooms on each floor, as well as a courtyard and balconies.

"A majority of them are one bedroom, so (it) could be a small family or a single family, and seven two-bedrooms," said Abigail Lane, with Englewood CDC.

The new affordable housing units are owned and operated by the nonprofit Englewood CDC.

Englewood joined the city and CVS Health to invest a total of $12 million into the property.

Ten units are specifically for young people experiencing homelessness.

"Some of these people may be trying to finish high school, they may be looking for their first job or they may have a first child to care for," Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said.

Property leaders said 37 rooms are for families earning 30% to 60% of the area median income.

The cheapest rent is around $400 a month.

"When we opened the waiting list for this property, we had about 300 inquiries and applicants, like that," a representative with Englewood said.

"I'm with my dad right now, so this would be a big step up for me," Allen said. "They're cutting our hours, and if I were to stay here, it wouldn't put me in a predicament where I'm stressing about my rent, and it's affordable for me."

For Hoosiers like Allen, she hopes she can be one of the few to get on the list and moved into her new room.

"Yes, fingers crossed. I really like it," Allen said.

Right now, the lofts say they are still accepting applications. You can find more information here.
