BLOOMINGTON, Ind — Indiana's 32nd Safe Haven Baby Box will open to residents in Bloomington Wednesday. The box will be located on the west side of the Bloomington Fire Station.

The Safe Haven boxes were created in 2016 after reports of abandoned babies not just in Indiana, but across the nation. This will be Bloomington's first box. The next closest box is located in Owen County.

So far this year, four babies have been surrendered to Safe Haven Baby Boxes, the organization said. Another 16 newborns have been surrendered directly to hospitals or first responders with the help of the organization.

The baby boxes have heating and cooling features to keep the babies as safe as possible in the time between when someone drops them off and when someone can rescue them. The boxes have alarm systems that immediately call 911 when they are used.
