INDIANAPOLIS — An early morning fire displaced residents at the Canal Square Apartments on North West Street Thursday.
Nobody was injured.
Indianapolis Fire crews were called at 4:45 a.m. on a balcony fire on the second floor. The first call came because there was light smoke in a hallway that triggered smoke alarms.
The man in the apartment where the fire started said he has no idea what started the fire, but he called 911 from the balcony area with no visible fire showing at that time.
Then he left the apartment.
Minutes later, fire broke out near the second floor balcony and spread to the balcony on the third floor, according to IFD.
Moderate smoke spread throughout the building, but IFD said the fire was contained to the balconies and the outside portion of the structure.
Six apartments were affected because utilities had to be shut off, and some sustained fire, smoke and/or water damage.
The apartment manager helped fire crews evacuate the building and account for all residents.
