INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Some of the remaining survivors of the USS Indianapolis are in town this weekend.
They're here for their annual reunion.
Only 14 of the 317 men who survived the ship's sinking are still alive.
Nearly 1,200 crewmen were on the ship back on July 30, 1945.
Mayor Joe Hogsett honored the families of those who have passed at a Gold Star presentation today.
Their families read some letters in their honor.
"As a very young boy from Eddieville, Iowa, I had three dreams in life," a family member of one of the deceased crew members said. "My first dream was to become a sailor in the navy. My second dream was to marry my elementary school sweetheart by the name of Peggy. My third dream was to have children with Peggy."
The mayor also read a proclamation at today's event naming July 20 as USS Indianapolis day.
