Craig Ryland was arrested in December 2014, a day after a rape charge was filed against him and a warrant issued in Hendricks County.

Marion County Sheriff John Layton sent Ryland a termination letter saying his employment would be terminated at the end of December.

Court documents show Ryland was charged with "rape when compelled by force or imminent threat of force," a Level 3 felony. Eyewitness News has learned that the charge was dropped.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the incident happened early in the morning of November 30. Ryland and the alleged victim had a previous relationship, and according to police documents, they did have consensual sex that night. But the woman said that following that, Ryland raped her.

That victim then went to Hendricks Regional Hospital where she was examined, and a sexual assault kit was collected.

Danville police executed a search warrant December 10 at Ryland's home to collect DNA swabs to compare them to the sexual assault kit. Ryland appeared in court Thursday following his arrest. He posted bond and was released from the Hendricks County Jail later that day.

Ryland had been employed by the Marion County Sheriff's Office since 2007.
