Quarantine hair no more: Barber shops, salons open by appointment-only

With barbershops and beauty salons back open in most counties in Indiana, many Hoosiers ventured out on Monday to get their hair cleaned up, and Carlos Diaz was first in line at locally-owned Nomad Barbershop in Greenwood.

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WTHR) — We’ve been waiting almost two months to say this: "Quarantine hair" is no more!

With barbershops and beauty salons back open in most counties in Indiana, many Hoosiers ventured out on Monday to get their hair cleaned up, and 13News' Carlos Diaz was first in line at locally-owned Nomad Barbershop in Greenwood.

Owner Jonathan Wilson said he felt like a kid on the first day of school on Monday, his first day back since closing down in mid-March due to Gov. Holcomb's coronavirus restrictions.

“We usually do about 40 appointments on [pre-coronavirus] Monday,” Wilson said. “As of right now, we have 104 appointments today, and all week, it’s over 100 appointments every day.”

When does Wilson think he’ll be able to recover from having his Greenwood and Franklin barbershops closed for the last 2 months?

“Well, if I keep doing 100 appointments a day, it shouldn’t take long,” Wilson said.

Here are some of the precautions Nomad Barbershop is taking as they reopen their doors:

  • All barbers will wear masks and gloves
  • Appointments are required, walk-ins are discouraged
  • Customers must wait in their car until the barber motions them into the shop
  • Clear, plastic shower curtains now hang between each barber station
  • Each customer will receive a clean, disinfected cape for their haircut
  • The chairs in the waiting area have been replaced with benches for easier cleaning and disinfecting
  • The free coffee station has been replaced with a station featuring hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes

The coronavirus pandemic caused Wilson to send all his barbers "back to school."

“All my barbers are all certified through the Barbericide [Certification] Program,” Wilson said, "but it's always good to take a refresher course, so I had all my barbers go through and do that of course again.”

So are all these restrictions a burden?

“I’d do anything to reopen, so I don’t mind these changes at all,” Wilson said.
