Promoting education is one objective of back-to-school event at Indianapolis apartment complex

There have been multiple deadly shootings at this near east side community in the past two years, but the new manager is looking to change the story.

INDIANAPOLIS — It is shocking video, allegedly showing a man firing gunshots into the air outside an Indianapolis apartment complex, then apparently encouraging two kids to do the same.

13News told you about 37-year-old Jeffery Ware's arrest Tuesday following the alleged incident on Saturday.

We've learned there have been multiple deadly shootings at New Bridge Apartments, near 25th & Keystone, over the past two years, but the new manager is looking to change the story.

On Wednesday, there was a special event at New Bridge, promoting community and education.

There are so many smiling faces here at this back-to-school party. Management is stepping up to make sure families and kids not only have what they need for school, and that they also have safety, security and community.

Security guards were there to hand out backpacks to kids, many who they have already established relationships with. Staff brought out a bounce house, food and drinks.

Parents say this is what it's about, having management that truly cares about their tenants.

"We in a bad state of the world right now, no one really making it. Everybody is struggling, so if one person helps another, then we can all follow," said parent Natasha Beecher.

Beecher and other parents say they are truly grateful for what staff has been doing for this community. In the last four months, manager Shelly Corken has made it her mission to make New Bridge Apartments a safe and welcoming place to live, and tenants will tell you their hearts are full because of it.
