NORTH SALEM, Ind. — A Hendricks County woman was wounded when a bullet reportedly fired by target shooters nearly a mile away struck her in the arm Monday.
The 70-year-old woman told Hendricks County Sheriff's Office detectives she was sitting on her porch around 2:45 p.m. April 8 when she felt something poke her in the arm. She initially thought a bird had struck her with its beak, but then noticed a bullet hole in her arm.
The woman was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators later determined several people had been target shooting at a home on North State Road 75 near North Salem, about 4,400 feet from the woman's home on Ladoga Road.
Police said the people at the home cooperated with investigators. A 25-year-old man told police he had fired a rifle into a backstop while the group was target shooting. Investigators found the backstop was made up of a dirt berm that was in front of staggered rows of trees. Beyond that, investigators said, were a pair of large farm fields, which included topographical rises and more trees before reaching the woman's home.
After reviewing the case, no criminal charges were fired in the incident.
