Police: Suspect wounded in officer-involved shooting was wanted on warrant

Lawrence police say an officer shot a possible theft suspect at the end of a chase Tuesday afternoon.

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WTHR) - Lawrence police investigating an officer-involved shooting said late Tuesday the person shot after a pursuit was wanted on a warrant.

Police said the chase began near 56th Street and Post Road after a 911 call about a theft from a Pendleton Pike business.

The pursuit ended near 56th and Brendon Park Drive when the driver lost control of the car, drove over a sidewalk and landed along the road.

The circumstances that followed are still under investigation, but officers had said earlier Tuesday some type of struggle took place between the suspect and an officer.

A Lawrence police spokesperson says an officer fired two shots. The suspect was struck twice and was taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition. Police said the wounds don't appear to be life-threatening.

Officers later learned the person had been sought on a Marion County warrant for possession of cocaine.

Another person in the car fled on foot but was apprehended by officers, according to a spokesperson. That person was found to be wanted on a probation violation warrant.

No one else was injured.
