BROWNSBURG, Ind. (WTHR) - Police in Brownsburg shot and wounded a suspect late Monday.
The shooting happened shortly before 10 p.m. Monday at the intersection of E. Main Street and Odell Street.
Police say they believe 28-year-old Julio Serrano was part of a disturbance near the Ashwood subdivision in Brownsburg. Indiana State Police, who is conducting the investigation into the shooting, say officers were originally called to that subdivsion on a report of someone pointing a gun.
One of the people involved in that disturbance was able to give police the description of a vehicle involved, a white Cadillac Escalade. Officers found that vehicle a short time later.
After stopping the SUV at Main and Odell Streets, police attempted to get three people in the SUV out. Police say Serrano then got into an altercation with an officer. That officer tried to use a stun gun on Serrano, but it is not clear if that was successful.
The officer then fired at least one shot, hitting Serrano. He was taken into surgery at Eskenazi Health, but his condition is not known at this time.
State Police say they recovered a handgun at the scene.
Another man who was in the Escalade, 31-year-old Marek Mikolajczyc, is in custody. A female from the suspect vehicle, identified as Brittani Griebahn, remains at large. State Police say they would still like to talk to her.
"If she fled out of fear, we would expect that she will turn herself in right away and contact police," said Seargant John Perrine. "If she fled because she was involved in criminal activity, then we need people that know where she is, to contact police and let us know so that we can talk to her."
"It's unknown if [Griebahn] has any weapons or has a gun, or what their intentions are, so at this time, we're not asking for any help," said April Hyde with Brownsburg Police. "It would be more prudent for the neighbors in the area just to stay in their house and call if they do see anything from inside their house.
