"He's alleging his mother and him and his father had a conversation that when it was mother's time to go he would assist her and his father did not want to live without her so he was going to go also," said Sheriff Jay Harris, Randolph County.
The suspect's mother, Cheri Hartman, was battling brain cancer.
Police are still investigating. He has a court appearancenext Monday at 11:30 am.
Hartman has been in the Randolph County jail since his arrest last Saturday for allegedly breaking into a neighbor's home. He now faces a preliminary murder charge in the Feb. 12 deaths of his parents.
