Victim identified after body found in northwest side pond

IMPD homicide detectives have identified the man found dead in a retention pond on the northwest side Saturday.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - IMPD homicide detectives have identified the man found dead in a retention pond on the northwest side Saturday.

Andre Cooper, 38, had not been seen since 11 p.m. Wednesday. His sister reported him missing just before noon Saturday, saying it wasn't out of the ordinary for him to leave for a couple of days at a time so she hadn't immediately begun to worry. But then she found out he hadn't gone to work the last two days.

While police were taking her initial report, they got another call about a body floating in a retention pond in the 7700 block of Santa Monica Drive, near 79th and Georgetown Road.

Pike Township Fire Department came to help, and pulled the body from the water. The Marion County Coroner will conduct the autopsy to determine his exact cause of death.

Detectives did locate an empty bottle of alcohol and a pack of cigarettes near the retention pond and apartment building where Cooper was last seen. Detectives do not suspect foul play and believe that this could be an accidental drowning.

IMPD chaplains were called to the scene to help the family cope with the sudden and tragic loss of their family member.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317) 327-TIPS (8477). Information given to Crime Stoppers is considered anonymous.
